Club Achievements
November 2018:
The first round of the UNC Math Contest was held on October 30, and Creek had 28 people qualify for the final round, the most for any school! Special congratulations to Ellie Greyson for getting a perfect score. In Math Madness, Creek won the first two elimination rounds, but lost 34-35 to Clements High School in the round of sixteen. As of Thanksgiving, this earns 9th place in the nation, with 5 students among the top 105 nationwide: Austen Mazenko (28th), Derwin Wu (42nd), Brandon Dong (54th), Aiden Lee (79th), Rahul Thomas (104th).
Additionally, in the Online Math Open, the team of Austen Mazenko, Derwin Wu, Rahul Thomas, and Sid Ijju took 13th place.
In Colorado Math League, Creek is in first place with perfect 30s on the first two contests. Individually, on the first contest Siddarth Ijju, Aiden Lee, Austen Mazenko, Zoe Messenger, Rahul Thomas, and Derwin Wu all had perfect scores.
May 2017:
The 34th Colorado Mathematical Olympiad Award Ceremony was held May 5 at the University of Colorado in Colorado Springs. On the previous Friday contestants were given five problems to write essay type solutions in four hours. Avi Swartz was awarded first prize of an Olympiad Gold Medal and a $1000 scholarship. He was complemented for an unheard of perfect paper. Third prize was shared by Austen Mazenko and another student. Austen received an Olympiad Bronze Medal. Rahul Thomas received 1st Honorable Mention and Siddarth Ijju was 2nd Honorable Mention.
Results of the USAMO (United States of America Mathematical Olympiad) and USAJMO (United States of America Junior Mathematical Olympiad) were released. Avi Swartz tied for 28th in the nation out of 285 contestants for USAMO. His score of 21 was two away from Honorable Mention at 23. Austen Mazenko tied for 34th in the nation out of 222 contestants for USAJMO. His score of 28 was five away from Honorable Mention at 33.
March/April 2017:
Cherry Creek Math Team completed the year first in the state in the Colorado Math League. Two students, Avi Swartz and Austen Mazenko, had a perfect score on every test and ended tied for first in the state.
Austen Mazenko won the local Trig Star contest with a score of 88/100 in 42 minutes 52 seconds. He is waiting to see if that is the best score in the state.
Avi Swartz and Austen Mazenko were two of five hundred students nationally who qualified for the USA(J)MO contest which was held April 19 and 20. Results will be released in May. Austen qualified with a perfect score on the AMC 10A and a perfect score on the AIME. He was the only freshman in the country to get a perfect score on AIME.
February 2017:
The American Mathematics Competitions (AMC) 10A and 12A were held February 7. Ten students qualified for the American Invitational Mathematics Examination (AIME) in March. The qualifiers from AMC 12A were Avi Swartz, Toby Lee, Isani Singh. Hari Sowrirajan. And Christopher Lee. The qualifiers from AMC 10A were Austen Mazenko, Sarah Gao, Rahul Thomas, Michael Hu, and Derek Li. Austen Mazenko was one of only 28 perfect scores in the United States.
The AMC 10B and 12B were held February 15. Seven students qualified for AIME in March. The qualifiers from AMC 12B were Hari Sowrirajan. Avi Swartz, Sarah Gao, and Isani Singh. Qualifiers from AMC 10B were Rahul Thomas, Austen Mazenko, and Derek Li. This time Rahul Thomas had a perfect score and was one of only 65 perfect scores in the country.
Colorado Math League perfect scores in February included Derwin Wu, Avi Swartz, Austen Mazenko, Sarah Gao and Isani Singh. Perfect scores in March included Christopher Lee, Austen Mazenko, Derwin Wu, Isani Singh, Rahul Thomas, and Avi Swartz. Final results are pending for the winning school for Colorado.
January 2017:
The winners of the 25th Annual UNC State Mathematics Contest have been announced. Avi Swartz was the winner of the contest. Other Cherry Creek students placing in the top 16 were: Hari Sowrirajan (tied for 3rd), Austen Mazenko (tied for 9th), Rahul Thomas and Derwin Wu (tied for 11th), and Michael Hu (tied for 14th). Sarah Gao and Siddarth Ijju were honorable mention. The winners will be recognized at a banquet at UNC April 9.
Nine students competed in the Canadian Open Mathematics Challenge in November. The results have been announced and Rahul Thomas had the highest score for Cherry Creek with a score in the 98th percentile. He was followed by Austen Mazenko in the 97th percentile and Derwin Wu in the 95th percentile.
Cherry Creek continues to lead Fairview in the Colorado Math League contests. The following students had a perfect score on the January contest: Avi Swartz, Rahul Thomas, Derwin Wu, Hari Sowrirajan, Austen Mazenko, and Siddarth Ijju.
November/December 2016:
Cherry Creek finished third in the nation in the Math Madness competition. After nine straight victories, they lost in the semifinals to University High School in Irvine, California. Students nationally ranked in the top 1000 out of 19,808 students participating are:

Cherry Creek is leading Fairview by two points after the second round of Colorado Math League. Three students have had a perfect score in both of the first two rounds: Avi Swartz, Austen Mazenko, and Isani Singh. Other students who have had a perfect score on one of the two rounds are Derwin Wu, Hari Sowrirajan, and Rahul Thomas.
The final round of the UNC Math Contest will be held January 21 in Greeley. Avi Swartz had a perfect score on the first round. October 2016:
The Cherry Creek Math Team is ranked 12th in the nation after 3 rounds of play in Math Madness. Creek defeated The Overlake School from Redmond, Washington with a score of 40-30. The second opponent, Amherst Regional High School from Amherst, Massachusetts was defeated 39-7. Creek then defeated The Winsor School from Boston, Massachusetts by a score of 38-11.
Fourteen Creek players are ranked in the top 1000 out of 19,131 participants nationwide. Avi Swartz has had perfect scores on every round and is ranked 7th in the nation. Other students ranked include: Austen Mazenko (25th), Christopher Lee (73rd), Rahul Thomas (112th), Sarah Gao (148th), Siddarth Ijju (189th), Derwin Wu (276th), Andrew Ying (304th), Isani Singh (359th), Nathan Miao (372nd), Michael Hu (591st), Rohit Amarnath (641st), Akshunna Vaishnav (719th), and Vatsal Shrivastava (855th).
The American Mathematical Society conducted the first round of Who Wants to Be a Mathematician. Nine students advanced to the second round where students compete to qualify for the top ten in the nation and an invitation to Atlanta, Georgia to compete for $5000 and the national title. Students who qualified for the second round are Avi Swartz, Austen Mazenko, Derwin Wu, Sarah Gao, Isani Singh, Christopher Lee, Siddarth Ijju, Rahul Thomas, and Vatsal Shrivastava.
June 2016:
Congratulations to Avi Swartz of Cherry Creek HS who has been invited to attend the Mathematical Olympiad Summer Program (MOSP), a 3-week intensive problem solving camp held at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln to help high school students prepare for math olympiads, especially the International Mathematical Olympiad. Only the top 50-60 students who write the USA Mathematical Olympiad or USA Junior Mathematical Olympiad are invited to train for the International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO).
The AMC 12 is one in a series of examinations (followed in the United States by the American Invitational Examination and the USA Mathematical Olympiad) that culminate in participation in the International Mathematical Olympiad, the most prestigious and difficult secondary mathematics examination in the world. Avi completed the series of exams in 32nd place out of over 200,000 students.
May 2016:
Avi Swartz has won the 32nd Trig Star Contest for Colorado. He had the only perfect score in the state and will take the National Trig Star Test in May.
The Colorado Math Olympiad was held April 22 in Colorado Springs with 233 participants. Eight students from Cherry Creek participated and all eight placed. There were five problems with essay type solutions to be done in four hours. Second place was awarded to Avi Swartz. Austen Mazenko tied for third place and Sarah Gao tied for fourth place. First Honorable Mentions included Jeremy Schiff and Derwin Wu. Second Honorable Mentions included Rahul Thomas, Isani Singh, and Zohreh Haycock.
March and April 2016:
Avi Swartz won the 2015-2016 Trig-Star contest for Cherry Creek High School. He had a perfect score in 33 minutes 25 seconds. Trig Star is a timed competition that involves solving trig problems. The contest is sponsored by the National Society of Professional Surveyors and cosponsored by the Public Works Department of the City of Aurora. The state winner will be announced at the Trig Star Awards April 26. The state winner will advance to the national contest.
Andrew Ying and Avi Swartz have qualified to take the USA Math Olympiad. Austen Mazenko has qualified to take the USA Junior Math Olympiad. The USA(J)MO is a prestigious event that only about 500 students from thousands of American Invitational Mathematics Examination participants are invited to take the nine hour test. There will be two 4.5-hour sessions. The top participants will then be invited to the Mathematical Olympiad Summer Program (MOSP) which will be held June 7 – July 2 at Carnegie Mellon.
Cherry Creek Math Tem won the Colorado Mathematics League for 2015-2016. There were six contests throughout the school year. Each time Creek submitted five perfect scores. Isani Singh and Hari Sowrirajan had a perfect score on every contest and tied two others at Fairview for highest scoring cumulative scores in the state.
January and February 2016:
On January 28 ten students from the Math Team took the 10th Annual NACLO (North American Computational Linguistics Olympiad) test. This was a three hour test. Avi Swartz has been invited to the NACLO Invitational Round March 10. He was one of 174 students who scored in the top 10% out of over 2000 students in the United States and Canada.
The Final Round of the UNC State Math Contest was held January 23, 2016 in Greeley at the University of Northern Colorado. Two hundred thirty-six students out of 1398 statewide qualified for the Final Round. The top sixteen students were invited to the awards banquet April 2. Students from Cherry Creek Math Team who placed in the top sixteen were: 2nd Austen Mazenko, 3rd Hari Sowrirajan, 4th Avi Swartz, 9th Derwin Wu, and 15th Rahul Thomas. Four other students were named as Honorable Mention: Sarah Gao, Michael Hu, AJ Kumar, and Isani Singh.
Cherry Creek continues to be the top scoring high school in the state on Colorado Math League. In January there were five perfect scores: Austen Mazenko, Hari Sowrirajan, Toby Lee, Avi Swartz, and Isani Singh. On the February contest there were again five perfect scores: Avi Swartz, Isani Singh, Hari Sowrirajan, Christopher Lee, and Derwin Wu. The last contest is in March. Cherry Creek is currently ranked number one in the state for this contest. Isani Singh and Hari Sowrirajan are two of the four students in the state with a perfect score on every contest.
The results of AMC A and B have been released. Qualifying from AMC 10/12A for the AIME test are: Andrew Ying (He tied for the 2nd highest score in the nation.), Avi Swartz (He tied for the 5th highest score in the nation.), Hari Sowrirajan ( He was the AMC 10A school winner.) , Michel Hu, Austen Mazenko, Christopher Lee, Derwin Wu, and Isani Singh. The AMC 12A team score placed Cherry Creek 10th in the nation.
Qualifying from AMC 10/12B for the AIME test are: Avi Swartz, Isani Singh, Austen Mazenko, Hari Sowrirajan, Toby Lee, and Rahul Thomas.
November and December 2015:
Sixteen students competed in the 24th Annual UNC Math Contest on November 2. A total of 1398 students in the state participated and 236 advanced to the finals. All sixteen of the Cherry Creek students were invited to the final round in January at UNC Greeley. Austen Mazenko had one of the seven perfect scores in the state. Students advancing are Sarah Gao, Zohreh Haycock, Michael Hu, Aditya Kumar, Christopher Lee, Austen Mazenko, Rupal Nigam, Jeremy Schiff, Isani Singh, Hari Sowrirajan, Avi Swartz, Rahul Thomas, Anit Tyagi, Akshunna Vaishnav, Derwin Wu, and Andrew Ying.
Twenty three students participated in the November Colorado Math League Contest. Seven students had a perfect score: Avi Swartz, Austen Mazenko, Derwin Wu, Isani Singh, Jeremy Schiff, AJ Kumar, and Hari Sowrirajan.
Eighteen students participated in the December Colorado Math League. Eleven of those students had a perfect score: Sarah Gao, Michael Hu, Won Jae Kim, Seungwon Lee, Austen Mazenko, Jeremy Schiff, Isani Singh, Hari Sowrirajan, Avi Swartz, Rahul Thomas, and Derwin Wu. Cherry Creek remains in first place in the state.
Preliminary results of the 2015 Canadian Open Mathematics Challenge were released in December. Eleven students participated. The top Creek score was Avi Swartz with 60/80 which put him in the 96.63rd percentile. He was followed by Austen Mazenko with 56/80, Rahul Thomas with 53/80, Derwin Wu with 52/80 and Sarah Gao with 51/80. These five students all finished above the 90th percentile.
Math Madness ended this year with Cherry Creek losing to Wayzata by one point. Creek finished 60th in the nation. There were 17,412 students participating nationwide. Cherry Creek placed 10 students in the top 1000: Austen Mazenko 70th, Avi Swartz 125th, Andrew Ying 260th, Isani Singh 265th, Derwin Wu 561st, Rahul Thomas 585th, Sarah Gao 604th, Christopher Lee 672nd, Won Jae Kim 693rd, and AJ Kumar 833rd .
September and October 2015: Approximately forty people have joined Math Team this year. Meetings began in August. There is now a leadership team of Avi Swartz (president), Jeremy Schiff, WonJae Kim, Isani Singh, and Andrew Ying. In the beginning meetings these students taught topics relevant to contests.
Math Madness League play began September 28. The top teams from last year were placed in pools with other top twenty teams. Cherry Creek defeated The Davidson Academy of Nevada 39-38. Christopher Lee, Sarah Gao, Isani Singh, and Austen Mazenko all had perfect scores of 8/8. The next match was against Carmel High School and ended in a 33-33 tie. Carmel won on the tiebreaker of time. In this match Avi Swartz, Andrew Ying, and Isani Singh all had perfect scores of 7/7. The following week Creek played Fremont High School of Sunnyvale, CA. It was another close match and Creek lost 35-34. Avi Swartz had the only perfect score of 8/8. After these rounds Creek was a top 16 team and was placed in the bracket round of 64 teams with the top 16 being seeded against lower ranked teams. The first match was against Leominster from Massachusetts. Creek won 32-5 with Austen Mazenko getting the only perfect score of 8/8. The next opponent is yet to be determined.
The first round of testing for Who Wants to be a Mathematician was held September 29. Students who passed Round One by scoring at least 8/10 included: Avi Swartz (perfect score), Sarah Gao, Rahul Thomas, Austen Mazenko, Derwin Wu, Isani Singh, and Andrew Ying. Round Two was held October 19. The highest score was 9/10 from Avi Swartz. The top ten students in the nation will be selected to attend the finals in Seattle in January. Results will be announced in November.
Colorado Math League began October 13. Cherry Creek is in first place in the state. Six students had a perfect score of 6/6: Andrew Ying, Hari Sowrirajan, Sarah Gao, Isani Singh, and Austen Mazenko. Creek leads Fairview by 30-27.
May 2015: The 31st Annual Trig-Star Awards was held May 6 at the Aurora Municipal Building. Lubin Deng was recognized as the winner for Colorado with a perfect score in the fastest time on the contest. Lubin will compete in the National Trig-Star contest in May. The 2015 Colorado Mathematics Awards reception was held May 12 at the Grant-Humphreys Mansion. Top Colorado individual winner in AMC 10 was Avi Swartz with a perfect score. Austen Mazenko had the top score on AMC for 7th/8th grade. Honorable mention on AMC 10 were Anjalie Kini, Isani Singh, and Andrew Ying. AMC 12 honorable mention included Lubin Deng and Won Jae Kim. Avi Swartz was recognized as a USA Junior Math Olympiad Qualifier. Austen Mazenko and Anjalie Kini were recognized as members of the Colorado MATHCOUNTS Team. The Colorado team placed 27th in national MATHCOUNTS competition. The 32nd Colorado Mathematical Olympiad awards were presented May 1 at UCCS. The Olympians were offered five problems and four hours to solve them and present complete essay-type solutions. Avi Swartz tied for first place in the state and received an Olympiad Gold Medal. Second prize was awarded to Anjalie Kini who received an Olympiad Silver Medal. Receiving First Honorable Mention were Jeremy Schiff, Isani Singh, and Austen Mazenko. Hari Sowrirajan received Second Honorable Mention.
March & April 2015: Cherry Creek High School has tied with Fairview for first in the state in Colorado Math League for the 2014-2015 school year. The contest consists of six tests throughout the school year with six questions each month. Avi Swartz tied for top cumulative score in the state with a perfect six contest score of 36. Other Creek students listed as high scoring students along with their six test total out of 36 are: Anjalie Kini (35), Isani Singh (35), Lubin Deng (34), Austen Mazenko (34), Hari Sowrirajan (33), Christopher Lee (31), and Jeremy Schiff (30). On Sunday, April 12, five Cherry Creek math students were among students honored at the awards banquet in Greeley. Avi Swartz had the top score in the state and the only perfect score. He presented a talk on Cellular Automata, which is a collection of cells with a simple set of rules and a given starting value. Avi explained John Conway’s cellular automaton, the Game of Life. He showed the group different types of patterns that occur in the game such as Still Lifes, Oscillators, and Gliders. Avi was presented with an autographed copy of one of Conway’s books. Other students receiving awards were Anjalie Kini (5th place overall), Lubin Deng, Isani Singh, and Austen Mazenko. Avi Swartz has qualified to take the 44th USAJMO (USA Junior Mathematical Olympiad) April 28 and April 29. This will be a nine hour test taken over two days and consists of six essay-proof questions. Approximately 220 students nationwide are invited to sit for this exam. Top scorers on this contest will be invited to MOSP (Mathematical Olympiad Summer Program) at Carnegie Mellon University June 7 – July 1. Selection was based on qualifying AMC scores plus 10 times the AIME score. Avi tied for top AIME score amongst 10th graders in Colorado with a 10/15. Lubin Deng had the second highest AIME score amongst 12th graders in the state. Won Jae Kim tied for 2nd highest AIME score amongst 11th graders in the state. Andrew Ying tied for 3rd highest AIME score amongst 10th graders in the state. Hari Sowrirajan had the 2nd highest AIME score and Isani Singh tied for the 3rd highest AIME score amongst 9th graders in the state. Anjalie Kini had the highest AIME score amongst 8th graders in the state and Austen Mazenko had the highest AIME score amongst all 7th graders in the state.
February 2015: The Final Round of the 23rd Annual UNC State Mathematics Contest was held January 31. Avi Swartz finished ranked first with the only perfect paper in the state. Anjalie Kini finished in 5th place. Additional winners who will also attend the awards banquet are Lubin Deng, Isani Singh, and Austen Mazenko. Honorable Mentions included Christopher Lee and Hari Sowrirajan. The 5th round of Colorado Math League was held in February. Eight students scored a perfect 6/6 to keep Cherry Creek in a tie for 1st in the state. They were Lubin Deng, Avi Swartz, Anjalie Kini, Isani Singh, Austen Mazenko, Andrew Ying, Hari Sowrirajan, and Christopher Lee. On January 29 Jillian Kirchner, Anjalie Kini, Avi Swartz, Jeremy Schiff, Austen Mazenko, Andrew Ying, Erik Svenneby, and Matthew Yan participated in the NACLO (North American Computational Linguistics Olympiad). Results are pending. AMC A and AMC B results will be announced soon.
January 2015: The results of the Sun Life Financial Canadian Open Mathematics Challenge 2014 were announced in January. Avi Swartz scored in the 94.9th percentile and received an honor of Performance With Distinction along with Anjalie Kini who scored in the 77.84th percentile. Both Isani Singh (69.27th percentile) and Hari Sowrirajan (51.09th percentile) received Performance with Honors. Jeremy Schiff (42.37th percentile) received a Certificate of Participation. These students participated in November 2014 in the COMC which is Canada’s premier national mathematics competition. Colorado Math League Contest #4 took place in January. Five students scored a perfect score to keep Cherry Creek in at least a tie with Fairview as leaders in the state. These students were Lubin Deng, Anjalie Kini, Austen Mazenko, Isani Singh, and Avi Swartz. Upcoming events include NACLO (North American Computational Linguistics Olympiad), Finals of the UNC State Math Contest, and the AMC.
December 2014: Cherry Creek was defeated by The Harker School from San Jose, CA in the final four of the AMC/Interstellar High School Mathematics National Championship. The Harker School won the next match to win the National Championship. Avi Swartz finished with a #10 rank in the nation out of 14,482 participants. Other Creek students ranked in the top 1000 were: Lubin Deng #192, Anjalie Kini #263, Isani Singh #369, Austen Mazenko #395, Sirey Zhang #471, Jeremy Schiff #606, Won Jae Kim #735, Andrew Ying #762, and Christopher Lee #871. The third round of Colorado Math League was held December 9. Lubin Deng and Avi Swartz both had a perfect score. There were only three perfect scores in the state. This moved Cherry Creek into a tie for first place in the state with Fairview. There will be three more matches.
November 2014: Cherry Creek has reached the final four of the AMC/Interstellar High School Mathematics National Championship. The next opponent will be number one ranked The Harker School from San Jose, CA. Approximately 20 students have been playing online every Tuesday after school against other teams nationwide since September. The average of the top five scores from a round constitutes the team score for that round. In pool play Creek defeated Ramaz Upper School, Westwood HS from Mesa, AZ and Glenbrook North HS from Northbrook, IL. Creek then advanced to bracket play along with 63 other teams. In the first round Creek defeated Sacred Hearts Academy from Hawaii with an average of the top five scores 8.4/9. The next opponent was Stevenson School from Pebble Beach, CA. Creek again won with an average of 6.8/8. The next match against Irvington HS from California was kja tie 7.4/8 but Creek won the tiebreaker on average time. Clements HS from Sugar Land, Texas was the next opponent. The Creek team was the underdog as they were the lowest ranked team (12th) of the final eight. Nineteen students competed with five of the students getting a perfect 8/8. Lubin Deng, Avi Swartz, Christopher Lee, Austen Mazenko, and Sirey Zhang led the team to the final four. The team is ranked number 8 in the nation. Avi Swartz is ranked number 14 out of 14,424 students. The first round of the UNC Math Contest was held after school on Nov. 3. Twelve students participated. Avi Swartz and Isani Singh had perfect scores. There were only 6 perfect scores out of 1619 students statewide who took the test. Eleven percent of the students taking the test advanced but all Creek students who took the test will advance. Other qualifiers for the final round at UNC in January are Lubin Deng, AJ Kumar, Joyce Lee, Christopher Lee, Austen Mazenko, Jeremy Schiff, Hari Sowrirajan, Anit Tyagi, Andrew Ying, and Sirey Zhang. The second round of Colorado Math League was held Nov. 11. Four students had perfect scores: Austen Mazenko, Avi Swartz, Isani Singh, and Anjalie Kini. Two teams competed in the Fall Online Math Open. The Math Heads (Avi Swartz, Andrew Ying, Isani Singh, and Anjalie Kini) finished 73rd out of 233 teams. The Euler is Cool team (Austen Mazenko, Sirey Zhang, Hari Sowrirajan, and Jeremy Schiff) finished 134th. On November 7 five students took a 2.5 hour test for the Sun Life Financial Canadian Open Mathematics Challenge. Results are pending for Anjalie Kini, Avi Swartz, Isani Singh, Hari Sowrirajan, and Jeremy Schiff.
October 2014: Math Madness has begun. This is an online competition against other high schools. Creek is currently ranked 21st in the country after defeating Ramaz Upper School from New York, Westwood High School from Mesa, AZ and Glenbrook North High School from Northbrook, IL. The last match was decided at the last second with Creek having an average of 9/10 questions correct from the top 5 scores and Glenbrook North had 8.8/10. Several players are ranked in the top 1000 among 14,003 students. Avi Swartz is 26th in the country. Others ranked include Lubin Deng 133rd, Anjalie Kini 247th, Austen Mazenko 267th, Isani Singh 309th, Jeremy Schiff 440th, Andrew Ying 758th, and Christopher Lee 763rd. The first round of Colorado Math League was held October 14. Cherry Creek submitted 11 perfect scores of 6/6: Hari Sowrirajan, Lubin Deng, Avi Swartz, Jeremy Schiff, Allan Chen, Christopher Lee, Andrew Ying, Toby Lee, Austen Mazenko, Isani Singh, and Anjalie Kini. Six students advanced to the second qualifying round for Who Wants to Be a Mathematician. They are Lubin Deng, Sirey Zhang, Austen Mazenko, Avi Swartz, Andrew Ying, and Najalie Kini. Results will be announced October 20 if any qualified for the top 10 and a trip to San Antonio.
September 2014: Congratulations to the following six students for advancing to Round Two of the 2015 National Who Wants to Be a Mathematician Contest. They are now competing for a position as one of 10 students who will participate in the national semifinals in San Antonio in January. Lubin Deng, Sirey Zhang, Austen Mazenko, Avi Swartz, Andrew Yang, Anjalie Kini.
May 2014: 1) Result of USAJMO: Avi Swartz competed in the USAJMO two day, nine hour national contest along with 246 other students. He finished in a tie for 37th place in the nation. 2) 2014 Colorado Math Awards: On Tuesday, May 13, the 19th annual reception to honor outstanding performance in national and international mathematics competitions by Colorado students was held at Grant-Humphreys Mansion in Denver. Cherry Creek students honored were Lubin Deng, Jacob Imola, Avi Swartz, Andrew Ying, and Won Jae Kim. Other students that take math at Creek that were honored were Austen Mazenko, Hari Sowrirajan, and Anjalie Kini. 3) 2014 Colorado Mathematical Olympiad: On May 2 several students were recognized at the awards ceremony at The University of Colorado at Colorado Springs. Avi Swartz won a silver medal for 2nd place in the state. Jeremy Schiff won a bronze medal for 3rd place in the state. First honorable mention awards went to Andrew Ying, Lubin Deng, Austen Mazenko, and Anjalie Kini.
April 2014: Colorado Mathematical Olympiad 2014 Results: The 31st annual Colorado Mathematical Olympiad was held Friday, April 25, 2014 at UCCS in Colorado Springs. The awards were given out Friday, May 2. The silver medal for 2nd place was awarded to Avi Swartz. He also received a $500 scholarship to be used at any American university and books, and a calculator. Jeremy Schiff was tied for 3rd place and a bronze medal. He also received books and a calculator. Students on the Cherry Creek Math Team who received a First Honorable Mention were Lubin Deng, Andrew Ying, Austen Mazenko, and Anjalie Kini.
March 2014: Several contests came to a conclusion and others are still ongoing for 2013-2014. Lubin Deng won the Cherry Creek Trig Star contest with a perfect score in 35:21. He had the only perfect score in the state so he will advance to the National Trig Star Contest representing Colorado. Nine students advanced to the AIME based on their AMC 10 and AMC 12 scores: Avi Swartz, Sirey Zhang, Andrew Ying, Won Jae Kim, Lubin Deng, Jacob Imola, Jordan Crawford, Nicholas Hamson, and Austen Mazenko. Avi Swartz was invited to advance to the next round because of his qualifying score and will take the USAJMO contest on April 29 and 30. This is a 9 hour exam. He was one of 231 students in 10th grade or below that was selected in the US and Canada. The final round of Colorado Math League was held in March. Cherry Creek finished the year 2nd in the state to Fairview by a score of 175-172. Avi Swartz tied for first place in the state with a perfect score on each of the six tests. Other students placing in the state were: Jeffrey Li (tie for 3rd), Anjalie Kini (4th), Brandon Li (tie for 6th), Jacob Imola (7th), Lubin Deng (tie for 8th), Hari Sowrirajan (tie for 9th), Jeremy Schiff (tie for 12th), Allan Chen (tie for 13th), Austen Mazenko (tie for 14th), and Andrew Ying (tie for 16th). The Mandlebrot Competition concluded also in March. Cherry Creek was the top school in the Spruce Region – a 15 state western region. Avi Swartz was 6th in the region. Anjalie Kini tied for 18th, Jeffrey Li tied for 22nd and Lubin Deng was 23rd. Several students will travel to Colorado Springs on April 25 to compete in the Colorado Mathematical Olympiad.
February 2014: The American Mathematics Competition (AMC) is a 25 question, 75 minute multiple choice exam in secondary school mathematics. The AMC is used to help identify students with exceptional mathematics talent. In 2013, over 220,000 students competed. The AMC 10/12 is the first in a series of examinations. In the United States it is followed by the American Invitational Exam (AIME) and the USA Mathematical Olympiad. Those that advance participate in the International Mathematics Olympiad, the most prestigious and difficult secondary mathematics exam in the world. The AMC 12 A contest was held February 4. Lubin Deng, Nicholas Hamson and Jordan Crawford qualified for AIME with scores in the top 5%. AIME will be given March 13. Lubin’s score was the 3rd highest 11th grade score in Colorado. The AMC 12 B contest was held February 19. Jacob Imola scored in the top 1% and qualified for AIME. Jacob’s score was the 3rd highest 12th grade score in Colorado. The AMC 10 A contest was also held February 4. Four students qualified for AIME with scores in the top 2.5%: Andrew Ying, Avi Swartz, Sirey Zhang, and Austen Mazenko. Andrew Ying had the highest 9th grade score in Colorado followed by Avi Swartz in 2nd. Sirey Zhang had the 2nd highest 10th grade score in the state. Austen Mazenko had the highest 6th grade score in Colorado. The AMC 10 B contest was held February 19. Four students qualified for AIME: Avi Swartz, Won Jae Kim, Andrew Ying, and Sirey Zhang. Avi had the highest 9th grade score in Colorado followed by Andrew with the 2nd highest. Won Jae had the 4th highest 10th grade score in the state followed by Sirey with the 7th highest. The fifth round of the Colorado Math League was held in February. Students with a perfect score of 6 were Jacob Imola and Avi Swartz. Jeremy Schiff, Allan Chen, Austen Mazenko, and Hari Sowrirajan all scored five. Cherry Creek trails Fairview by three going into the final round in March.
January 2014: On Saturday, January 25, Cherry Creek Math Team traveled to UNC in Greeley to compete in the final round of the UNC Math Contest. Results were published a week later. Avi Swartz tied for 2nd, Jacob Imola tied for 5th, Lubin Deng placed 7th, and Jeffrey Li tied for 12th. These students will attend the awards banquet April 5th at UNC. Anjalie Kini, a Challenge student who also competes with Creek on selected competitions placed 15th for Challenge. Honorable mentions include Allan Chen and Andrew Ying. Hari Sowrirajan, a Challenge student who competes with Creek, received an honorable mention. The 4th round of Colorado Math League was held in January. Jacob Imola, Jeffrey Li, and Avi Swartz all had perfect scores. Cherry Creek is now 2nd in the state to Fairview trailing by two points with two rounds to go. The 3rd round of Mandlebrot in January resulted in three students with scores of 9 to lead Creek – Anjalie Kini, Jeffrey Li, and Avi Swartz. The 3rd round of the National Assessment & Testing contest results from December were released. Cherry Creek placed 13th as a team out of 114 schools nationally. Lubin Deng placed 13th out of 118 juniors in the nation. Avi Swartz tied for 2nd and Andrew Ying tied for 13th out of 112 freshmen in the nation. In the middle school division Hari Sowrirajan placed 2nd and Anjalie Kini placed 5th in the nation out of 31 middle school students. Students will compete in the AMC A and AMC B contests in February.
December 2013: In December, eight members of the math team competed in the National Assessment & Testing Time Trials. Students completed 10 sets of thee questions in three minutes for each set. Avi Swartz scored 77/100, Hari Sowrirajan 71/100, Anjalie Kini 62/100 and Lubin Deng 61/100. Round Two of the Mandlebrot Competition was completed. Avi Swartz again had a perfect score of 14 followed by Jacob Imola and Jeffrey Li with 12 and Anjalie Kini with 11. Avi is tied for the lead in a sixteen state region with two perfect scores. Jacob Imola, Anjalie Kini, and Lubin Deng are also ranked among the top 45. Cherry Creek is second to Fairview in the sixteen state region. The third round of Colorado Math League was December 3. Six students had a perfect score of 6. They were Jacob Imola, Jeffrey Li, Brandon Li, Avi Swartz, Anjalie Kini, and Hari Sowrirajan. Cherry Creek is now tied for 1st in the state with Fairview.
November 2013: Math Madness came to an end with Cherry Creek losing to Iolani School in Honolulu by a score of 7.7 to 7.2 This was the average of the ten top scores. Cherry Creek defeated four high schools previous to this match and ended the season ranked 51st out of 1000 high schools with the top five player averages. However, Cherry Creek was placed in a bracket to compete based on top ten averages. Creek gave a valiant effort with 17 students coming to the match against Iolani. Top scorers were Jacob Imola and Avi Swartz with 9/10 correct. They were followed by John Lee, Joyce Lee, and Jeffry Li who had 8/10. At the present time Avi Swartz is ranked 119/12,185 based on his average scores. Andrew Ying is ranked 220, Jeffrey Li 497, Allan Chen 818, and Lubin Deng 824. Results of the UNC Math Contest were received. Eleven students from Creek competed by taking an hour and a half test after school to qualify for the final round at UNC January 25. All eleven students qualified. Avi Swartz had a perfect score. Other students advancing are Lubin Deng, Jacob Imola, Jeffrey Li, Brandon Li, Sirey Zhang, Jeremy Schiff, Andrew Ying, Joyce Lee, Allen Chen, and Austen Mazenko. Creek participated in another round of Colorado Math League. Seven students had a perfect score of 6/6. They were Jeffrey Li, Jacob Imola, Avi Swartz, Lubin Deng, Brandon Li, Allen Chen, and Anjalie Kini. The first round of Mandlebrot Competition was in November. Avi Swartz had a perfect score of 14/14 followed by Lubin Deng with 11 and Jacob Imola with 10. The team also competed in a National Assessment & Testing team event scoring 50/100 as a team attempting 100 questions in 30 minutes.
October 2013: In the first round of the Colorado Math League Avi Swartz and Won Jae Kim had a perfect score of 6. National results of the National Assessment and Testing Fall Startup Event were released. At the 9th grade level Avi Swartz finished 2nd in the nation and Andrew Ying finished 24th. At the middle school level Anjalie Kini tied for 5th, Hari Sowrirajan tied for 9th and Isani Singh tied for 11th. Math Madness competition continued with Cherry Creek defeating Cascade High School from Everett, WA. High scorer was Avi Swartz with 8/10 followed by Jeffrey Li and Allen Chen each with 6/10. Creek defeated San Marino High School from San Marino, CA. High scorers in this round were Avi Swartz, Jeffrey Li, and Andrew Ying with 8/10 each. At the end of this match Cherry Creek was ranked 42/1000 teams in the nation. Avi Swartz was ranked 76th, Andrew Ying 86th, Jeffrey Li 251st, Allen Chen 469th, and Lubin Deng 795th out of 11,383 participants in the nation.
September 2013: On September 17, the Cherry Creek Math Team defeated Northside College Prep in an online match. Lubin Deng had a perfect score. Also in September, the team competed in the Fall Startup Event of the National Assessment & Testing contest. Students attempted 100 problems in 30 minutes. The best score for Creek was 83 by Avi Swartz. Students competed in the first round online of Who Wants to Be a Mathematician. Avi Swartz and Andrew Ying advanced to the second round from which 10 students will be selected to compete in the semifinals in Baltimore in January. The top prize is $5000 for the student and $5000 for the math department.
The first round of the UNC Math Contest was held on October 30, and Creek had 28 people qualify for the final round, the most for any school! Special congratulations to Ellie Greyson for getting a perfect score. In Math Madness, Creek won the first two elimination rounds, but lost 34-35 to Clements High School in the round of sixteen. As of Thanksgiving, this earns 9th place in the nation, with 5 students among the top 105 nationwide: Austen Mazenko (28th), Derwin Wu (42nd), Brandon Dong (54th), Aiden Lee (79th), Rahul Thomas (104th).
Additionally, in the Online Math Open, the team of Austen Mazenko, Derwin Wu, Rahul Thomas, and Sid Ijju took 13th place.
In Colorado Math League, Creek is in first place with perfect 30s on the first two contests. Individually, on the first contest Siddarth Ijju, Aiden Lee, Austen Mazenko, Zoe Messenger, Rahul Thomas, and Derwin Wu all had perfect scores.
May 2017:
The 34th Colorado Mathematical Olympiad Award Ceremony was held May 5 at the University of Colorado in Colorado Springs. On the previous Friday contestants were given five problems to write essay type solutions in four hours. Avi Swartz was awarded first prize of an Olympiad Gold Medal and a $1000 scholarship. He was complemented for an unheard of perfect paper. Third prize was shared by Austen Mazenko and another student. Austen received an Olympiad Bronze Medal. Rahul Thomas received 1st Honorable Mention and Siddarth Ijju was 2nd Honorable Mention.
Results of the USAMO (United States of America Mathematical Olympiad) and USAJMO (United States of America Junior Mathematical Olympiad) were released. Avi Swartz tied for 28th in the nation out of 285 contestants for USAMO. His score of 21 was two away from Honorable Mention at 23. Austen Mazenko tied for 34th in the nation out of 222 contestants for USAJMO. His score of 28 was five away from Honorable Mention at 33.
March/April 2017:
Cherry Creek Math Team completed the year first in the state in the Colorado Math League. Two students, Avi Swartz and Austen Mazenko, had a perfect score on every test and ended tied for first in the state.
Austen Mazenko won the local Trig Star contest with a score of 88/100 in 42 minutes 52 seconds. He is waiting to see if that is the best score in the state.
Avi Swartz and Austen Mazenko were two of five hundred students nationally who qualified for the USA(J)MO contest which was held April 19 and 20. Results will be released in May. Austen qualified with a perfect score on the AMC 10A and a perfect score on the AIME. He was the only freshman in the country to get a perfect score on AIME.
February 2017:
The American Mathematics Competitions (AMC) 10A and 12A were held February 7. Ten students qualified for the American Invitational Mathematics Examination (AIME) in March. The qualifiers from AMC 12A were Avi Swartz, Toby Lee, Isani Singh. Hari Sowrirajan. And Christopher Lee. The qualifiers from AMC 10A were Austen Mazenko, Sarah Gao, Rahul Thomas, Michael Hu, and Derek Li. Austen Mazenko was one of only 28 perfect scores in the United States.
The AMC 10B and 12B were held February 15. Seven students qualified for AIME in March. The qualifiers from AMC 12B were Hari Sowrirajan. Avi Swartz, Sarah Gao, and Isani Singh. Qualifiers from AMC 10B were Rahul Thomas, Austen Mazenko, and Derek Li. This time Rahul Thomas had a perfect score and was one of only 65 perfect scores in the country.
Colorado Math League perfect scores in February included Derwin Wu, Avi Swartz, Austen Mazenko, Sarah Gao and Isani Singh. Perfect scores in March included Christopher Lee, Austen Mazenko, Derwin Wu, Isani Singh, Rahul Thomas, and Avi Swartz. Final results are pending for the winning school for Colorado.
January 2017:
The winners of the 25th Annual UNC State Mathematics Contest have been announced. Avi Swartz was the winner of the contest. Other Cherry Creek students placing in the top 16 were: Hari Sowrirajan (tied for 3rd), Austen Mazenko (tied for 9th), Rahul Thomas and Derwin Wu (tied for 11th), and Michael Hu (tied for 14th). Sarah Gao and Siddarth Ijju were honorable mention. The winners will be recognized at a banquet at UNC April 9.
Nine students competed in the Canadian Open Mathematics Challenge in November. The results have been announced and Rahul Thomas had the highest score for Cherry Creek with a score in the 98th percentile. He was followed by Austen Mazenko in the 97th percentile and Derwin Wu in the 95th percentile.
Cherry Creek continues to lead Fairview in the Colorado Math League contests. The following students had a perfect score on the January contest: Avi Swartz, Rahul Thomas, Derwin Wu, Hari Sowrirajan, Austen Mazenko, and Siddarth Ijju.
November/December 2016:
Cherry Creek finished third in the nation in the Math Madness competition. After nine straight victories, they lost in the semifinals to University High School in Irvine, California. Students nationally ranked in the top 1000 out of 19,808 students participating are:

Cherry Creek is leading Fairview by two points after the second round of Colorado Math League. October 2016:
The Cherry Creek Math Team is ranked 12th in the nation after 3 rounds of play in Math Madness. Creek defeated The Overlake School from Redmond, Washington with a score of 40-30. The second opponent, Amherst Regional High School from Amherst, Massachusetts was defeated 39-7. Creek then defeated The Winsor School from Boston, Massachusetts by a score of 38-11.
Fourteen Creek players are ranked in the top 1000 out of 19,131 participants nationwide. Avi Swartz has had perfect scores on every round and is ranked 7th in the nation. Other students ranked include: Austen Mazenko (25th), Christopher Lee (73rd), Rahul Thomas (112th), Sarah Gao (148th), Siddarth Ijju (189th), Derwin Wu (276th), Andrew Ying (304th), Isani Singh (359th), Nathan Miao (372nd), Michael Hu (591st), Rohit Amarnath (641st), Akshunna Vaishnav (719th), and Vatsal Shrivastava (855th).
The American Mathematical Society conducted the first round of Who Wants to Be a Mathematician. Nine students advanced to the second round where students compete to qualify for the top ten in the nation and an invitation to Atlanta, Georgia to compete for $5000 and the national title. Students who qualified for the second round are Avi Swartz, Austen Mazenko, Derwin Wu, Sarah Gao, Isani Singh, Christopher Lee, Siddarth Ijju, Rahul Thomas, and Vatsal Shrivastava.
June 2016:
Congratulations to Avi Swartz of Cherry Creek HS who has been invited to attend the Mathematical Olympiad Summer Program (MOSP), a 3-week intensive problem solving camp held at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln to help high school students prepare for math olympiads, especially the International Mathematical Olympiad. Only the top 50-60 students who write the USA Mathematical Olympiad or USA Junior Mathematical Olympiad are invited to train for the International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO).
The AMC 12 is one in a series of examinations (followed in the United States by the American Invitational Examination and the USA Mathematical Olympiad) that culminate in participation in the International Mathematical Olympiad, the most prestigious and difficult secondary mathematics examination in the world. Avi completed the series of exams in 32nd place out of over 200,000 students.
May 2016:
Avi Swartz has won the 32nd Trig Star Contest for Colorado. He had the only perfect score in the state and will take the National Trig Star Test in May.
The Colorado Math Olympiad was held April 22 in Colorado Springs with 233 participants. Eight students from Cherry Creek participated and all eight placed. There were five problems with essay type solutions to be done in four hours. Second place was awarded to Avi Swartz. Austen Mazenko tied for third place and Sarah Gao tied for fourth place. First Honorable Mentions included Jeremy Schiff and Derwin Wu. Second Honorable Mentions included Rahul Thomas, Isani Singh, and Zohreh Haycock.
March and April 2016:
Avi Swartz won the 2015-2016 Trig-Star contest for Cherry Creek High School. He had a perfect score in 33 minutes 25 seconds. Trig Star is a timed competition that involves solving trig problems. The contest is sponsored by the National Society of Professional Surveyors and cosponsored by the Public Works Department of the City of Aurora. The state winner will be announced at the Trig Star Awards April 26. The state winner will advance to the national contest.
Andrew Ying and Avi Swartz have qualified to take the USA Math Olympiad. Austen Mazenko has qualified to take the USA Junior Math Olympiad. The USA(J)MO is a prestigious event that only about 500 students from thousands of American Invitational Mathematics Examination participants are invited to take the nine hour test. There will be two 4.5-hour sessions. The top participants will then be invited to the Mathematical Olympiad Summer Program (MOSP) which will be held June 7 – July 2 at Carnegie Mellon.
Cherry Creek Math Tem won the Colorado Mathematics League for 2015-2016. There were six contests throughout the school year. Each time Creek submitted five perfect scores. Isani Singh and Hari Sowrirajan had a perfect score on every contest and tied two others at Fairview for highest scoring cumulative scores in the state.
January and February 2016:
On January 28 ten students from the Math Team took the 10th Annual NACLO (North American Computational Linguistics Olympiad) test. This was a three hour test. Avi Swartz has been invited to the NACLO Invitational Round March 10. He was one of 174 students who scored in the top 10% out of over 2000 students in the United States and Canada.
The Final Round of the UNC State Math Contest was held January 23, 2016 in Greeley at the University of Northern Colorado. Two hundred thirty-six students out of 1398 statewide qualified for the Final Round. The top sixteen students were invited to the awards banquet April 2. Students from Cherry Creek Math Team who placed in the top sixteen were: 2nd Austen Mazenko, 3rd Hari Sowrirajan, 4th Avi Swartz, 9th Derwin Wu, and 15th Rahul Thomas. Four other students were named as Honorable Mention: Sarah Gao, Michael Hu, AJ Kumar, and Isani Singh.
Cherry Creek continues to be the top scoring high school in the state on Colorado Math League. In January there were five perfect scores: Austen Mazenko, Hari Sowrirajan, Toby Lee, Avi Swartz, and Isani Singh. On the February contest there were again five perfect scores: Avi Swartz, Isani Singh, Hari Sowrirajan, Christopher Lee, and Derwin Wu. The last contest is in March. Cherry Creek is currently ranked number one in the state for this contest. Isani Singh and Hari Sowrirajan are two of the four students in the state with a perfect score on every contest.
The results of AMC A and B have been released. Qualifying from AMC 10/12A for the AIME test are: Andrew Ying (He tied for the 2nd highest score in the nation.), Avi Swartz (He tied for the 5th highest score in the nation.), Hari Sowrirajan ( He was the AMC 10A school winner.) , Michel Hu, Austen Mazenko, Christopher Lee, Derwin Wu, and Isani Singh. The AMC 12A team score placed Cherry Creek 10th in the nation.
Qualifying from AMC 10/12B for the AIME test are: Avi Swartz, Isani Singh, Austen Mazenko, Hari Sowrirajan, Toby Lee, and Rahul Thomas.
November and December 2015:
Sixteen students competed in the 24th Annual UNC Math Contest on November 2. A total of 1398 students in the state participated and 236 advanced to the finals. All sixteen of the Cherry Creek students were invited to the final round in January at UNC Greeley. Austen Mazenko had one of the seven perfect scores in the state. Students advancing are Sarah Gao, Zohreh Haycock, Michael Hu, Aditya Kumar, Christopher Lee, Austen Mazenko, Rupal Nigam, Jeremy Schiff, Isani Singh, Hari Sowrirajan, Avi Swartz, Rahul Thomas, Anit Tyagi, Akshunna Vaishnav, Derwin Wu, and Andrew Ying.
Twenty three students participated in the November Colorado Math League Contest. Seven students had a perfect score: Avi Swartz, Austen Mazenko, Derwin Wu, Isani Singh, Jeremy Schiff, AJ Kumar, and Hari Sowrirajan.
Eighteen students participated in the December Colorado Math League. Eleven of those students had a perfect score: Sarah Gao, Michael Hu, Won Jae Kim, Seungwon Lee, Austen Mazenko, Jeremy Schiff, Isani Singh, Hari Sowrirajan, Avi Swartz, Rahul Thomas, and Derwin Wu. Cherry Creek remains in first place in the state.
Preliminary results of the 2015 Canadian Open Mathematics Challenge were released in December. Eleven students participated. The top Creek score was Avi Swartz with 60/80 which put him in the 96.63rd percentile. He was followed by Austen Mazenko with 56/80, Rahul Thomas with 53/80, Derwin Wu with 52/80 and Sarah Gao with 51/80. These five students all finished above the 90th percentile.
Math Madness ended this year with Cherry Creek losing to Wayzata by one point. Creek finished 60th in the nation. There were 17,412 students participating nationwide. Cherry Creek placed 10 students in the top 1000: Austen Mazenko 70th, Avi Swartz 125th, Andrew Ying 260th, Isani Singh 265th, Derwin Wu 561st, Rahul Thomas 585th, Sarah Gao 604th, Christopher Lee 672nd, Won Jae Kim 693rd, and AJ Kumar 833rd .
September and October 2015: Approximately forty people have joined Math Team this year. Meetings began in August. There is now a leadership team of Avi Swartz (president), Jeremy Schiff, WonJae Kim, Isani Singh, and Andrew Ying. In the beginning meetings these students taught topics relevant to contests.
Math Madness League play began September 28. The top teams from last year were placed in pools with other top twenty teams. Cherry Creek defeated The Davidson Academy of Nevada 39-38. Christopher Lee, Sarah Gao, Isani Singh, and Austen Mazenko all had perfect scores of 8/8. The next match was against Carmel High School and ended in a 33-33 tie. Carmel won on the tiebreaker of time. In this match Avi Swartz, Andrew Ying, and Isani Singh all had perfect scores of 7/7. The following week Creek played Fremont High School of Sunnyvale, CA. It was another close match and Creek lost 35-34. Avi Swartz had the only perfect score of 8/8. After these rounds Creek was a top 16 team and was placed in the bracket round of 64 teams with the top 16 being seeded against lower ranked teams. The first match was against Leominster from Massachusetts. Creek won 32-5 with Austen Mazenko getting the only perfect score of 8/8. The next opponent is yet to be determined.
The first round of testing for Who Wants to be a Mathematician was held September 29. Students who passed Round One by scoring at least 8/10 included: Avi Swartz (perfect score), Sarah Gao, Rahul Thomas, Austen Mazenko, Derwin Wu, Isani Singh, and Andrew Ying. Round Two was held October 19. The highest score was 9/10 from Avi Swartz. The top ten students in the nation will be selected to attend the finals in Seattle in January. Results will be announced in November.
Colorado Math League began October 13. Cherry Creek is in first place in the state. Six students had a perfect score of 6/6: Andrew Ying, Hari Sowrirajan, Sarah Gao, Isani Singh, and Austen Mazenko. Creek leads Fairview by 30-27.
May 2015: The 31st Annual Trig-Star Awards was held May 6 at the Aurora Municipal Building. Lubin Deng was recognized as the winner for Colorado with a perfect score in the fastest time on the contest. Lubin will compete in the National Trig-Star contest in May. The 2015 Colorado Mathematics Awards reception was held May 12 at the Grant-Humphreys Mansion. Top Colorado individual winner in AMC 10 was Avi Swartz with a perfect score. Austen Mazenko had the top score on AMC for 7th/8th grade. Honorable mention on AMC 10 were Anjalie Kini, Isani Singh, and Andrew Ying. AMC 12 honorable mention included Lubin Deng and Won Jae Kim. Avi Swartz was recognized as a USA Junior Math Olympiad Qualifier. Austen Mazenko and Anjalie Kini were recognized as members of the Colorado MATHCOUNTS Team. The Colorado team placed 27th in national MATHCOUNTS competition. The 32nd Colorado Mathematical Olympiad awards were presented May 1 at UCCS. The Olympians were offered five problems and four hours to solve them and present complete essay-type solutions. Avi Swartz tied for first place in the state and received an Olympiad Gold Medal. Second prize was awarded to Anjalie Kini who received an Olympiad Silver Medal. Receiving First Honorable Mention were Jeremy Schiff, Isani Singh, and Austen Mazenko. Hari Sowrirajan received Second Honorable Mention.
March & April 2015: Cherry Creek High School has tied with Fairview for first in the state in Colorado Math League for the 2014-2015 school year. The contest consists of six tests throughout the school year with six questions each month. Avi Swartz tied for top cumulative score in the state with a perfect six contest score of 36. Other Creek students listed as high scoring students along with their six test total out of 36 are: Anjalie Kini (35), Isani Singh (35), Lubin Deng (34), Austen Mazenko (34), Hari Sowrirajan (33), Christopher Lee (31), and Jeremy Schiff (30). On Sunday, April 12, five Cherry Creek math students were among students honored at the awards banquet in Greeley. Avi Swartz had the top score in the state and the only perfect score. He presented a talk on Cellular Automata, which is a collection of cells with a simple set of rules and a given starting value. Avi explained John Conway’s cellular automaton, the Game of Life. He showed the group different types of patterns that occur in the game such as Still Lifes, Oscillators, and Gliders. Avi was presented with an autographed copy of one of Conway’s books. Other students receiving awards were Anjalie Kini (5th place overall), Lubin Deng, Isani Singh, and Austen Mazenko. Avi Swartz has qualified to take the 44th USAJMO (USA Junior Mathematical Olympiad) April 28 and April 29. This will be a nine hour test taken over two days and consists of six essay-proof questions. Approximately 220 students nationwide are invited to sit for this exam. Top scorers on this contest will be invited to MOSP (Mathematical Olympiad Summer Program) at Carnegie Mellon University June 7 – July 1. Selection was based on qualifying AMC scores plus 10 times the AIME score. Avi tied for top AIME score amongst 10th graders in Colorado with a 10/15. Lubin Deng had the second highest AIME score amongst 12th graders in the state. Won Jae Kim tied for 2nd highest AIME score amongst 11th graders in the state. Andrew Ying tied for 3rd highest AIME score amongst 10th graders in the state. Hari Sowrirajan had the 2nd highest AIME score and Isani Singh tied for the 3rd highest AIME score amongst 9th graders in the state. Anjalie Kini had the highest AIME score amongst 8th graders in the state and Austen Mazenko had the highest AIME score amongst all 7th graders in the state.
February 2015: The Final Round of the 23rd Annual UNC State Mathematics Contest was held January 31. Avi Swartz finished ranked first with the only perfect paper in the state. Anjalie Kini finished in 5th place. Additional winners who will also attend the awards banquet are Lubin Deng, Isani Singh, and Austen Mazenko. Honorable Mentions included Christopher Lee and Hari Sowrirajan. The 5th round of Colorado Math League was held in February. Eight students scored a perfect 6/6 to keep Cherry Creek in a tie for 1st in the state. They were Lubin Deng, Avi Swartz, Anjalie Kini, Isani Singh, Austen Mazenko, Andrew Ying, Hari Sowrirajan, and Christopher Lee. On January 29 Jillian Kirchner, Anjalie Kini, Avi Swartz, Jeremy Schiff, Austen Mazenko, Andrew Ying, Erik Svenneby, and Matthew Yan participated in the NACLO (North American Computational Linguistics Olympiad). Results are pending. AMC A and AMC B results will be announced soon.
January 2015: The results of the Sun Life Financial Canadian Open Mathematics Challenge 2014 were announced in January. Avi Swartz scored in the 94.9th percentile and received an honor of Performance With Distinction along with Anjalie Kini who scored in the 77.84th percentile. Both Isani Singh (69.27th percentile) and Hari Sowrirajan (51.09th percentile) received Performance with Honors. Jeremy Schiff (42.37th percentile) received a Certificate of Participation. These students participated in November 2014 in the COMC which is Canada’s premier national mathematics competition. Colorado Math League Contest #4 took place in January. Five students scored a perfect score to keep Cherry Creek in at least a tie with Fairview as leaders in the state. These students were Lubin Deng, Anjalie Kini, Austen Mazenko, Isani Singh, and Avi Swartz. Upcoming events include NACLO (North American Computational Linguistics Olympiad), Finals of the UNC State Math Contest, and the AMC.
December 2014: Cherry Creek was defeated by The Harker School from San Jose, CA in the final four of the AMC/Interstellar High School Mathematics National Championship. The Harker School won the next match to win the National Championship. Avi Swartz finished with a #10 rank in the nation out of 14,482 participants. Other Creek students ranked in the top 1000 were: Lubin Deng #192, Anjalie Kini #263, Isani Singh #369, Austen Mazenko #395, Sirey Zhang #471, Jeremy Schiff #606, Won Jae Kim #735, Andrew Ying #762, and Christopher Lee #871. The third round of Colorado Math League was held December 9. Lubin Deng and Avi Swartz both had a perfect score. There were only three perfect scores in the state. This moved Cherry Creek into a tie for first place in the state with Fairview. There will be three more matches.
November 2014: Cherry Creek has reached the final four of the AMC/Interstellar High School Mathematics National Championship. The next opponent will be number one ranked The Harker School from San Jose, CA. Approximately 20 students have been playing online every Tuesday after school against other teams nationwide since September. The average of the top five scores from a round constitutes the team score for that round. In pool play Creek defeated Ramaz Upper School, Westwood HS from Mesa, AZ and Glenbrook North HS from Northbrook, IL. Creek then advanced to bracket play along with 63 other teams. In the first round Creek defeated Sacred Hearts Academy from Hawaii with an average of the top five scores 8.4/9. The next opponent was Stevenson School from Pebble Beach, CA. Creek again won with an average of 6.8/8. The next match against Irvington HS from California was kja tie 7.4/8 but Creek won the tiebreaker on average time. Clements HS from Sugar Land, Texas was the next opponent. The Creek team was the underdog as they were the lowest ranked team (12th) of the final eight. Nineteen students competed with five of the students getting a perfect 8/8. Lubin Deng, Avi Swartz, Christopher Lee, Austen Mazenko, and Sirey Zhang led the team to the final four. The team is ranked number 8 in the nation. Avi Swartz is ranked number 14 out of 14,424 students. The first round of the UNC Math Contest was held after school on Nov. 3. Twelve students participated. Avi Swartz and Isani Singh had perfect scores. There were only 6 perfect scores out of 1619 students statewide who took the test. Eleven percent of the students taking the test advanced but all Creek students who took the test will advance. Other qualifiers for the final round at UNC in January are Lubin Deng, AJ Kumar, Joyce Lee, Christopher Lee, Austen Mazenko, Jeremy Schiff, Hari Sowrirajan, Anit Tyagi, Andrew Ying, and Sirey Zhang. The second round of Colorado Math League was held Nov. 11. Four students had perfect scores: Austen Mazenko, Avi Swartz, Isani Singh, and Anjalie Kini. Two teams competed in the Fall Online Math Open. The Math Heads (Avi Swartz, Andrew Ying, Isani Singh, and Anjalie Kini) finished 73rd out of 233 teams. The Euler is Cool team (Austen Mazenko, Sirey Zhang, Hari Sowrirajan, and Jeremy Schiff) finished 134th. On November 7 five students took a 2.5 hour test for the Sun Life Financial Canadian Open Mathematics Challenge. Results are pending for Anjalie Kini, Avi Swartz, Isani Singh, Hari Sowrirajan, and Jeremy Schiff.
October 2014: Math Madness has begun. This is an online competition against other high schools. Creek is currently ranked 21st in the country after defeating Ramaz Upper School from New York, Westwood High School from Mesa, AZ and Glenbrook North High School from Northbrook, IL. The last match was decided at the last second with Creek having an average of 9/10 questions correct from the top 5 scores and Glenbrook North had 8.8/10. Several players are ranked in the top 1000 among 14,003 students. Avi Swartz is 26th in the country. Others ranked include Lubin Deng 133rd, Anjalie Kini 247th, Austen Mazenko 267th, Isani Singh 309th, Jeremy Schiff 440th, Andrew Ying 758th, and Christopher Lee 763rd. The first round of Colorado Math League was held October 14. Cherry Creek submitted 11 perfect scores of 6/6: Hari Sowrirajan, Lubin Deng, Avi Swartz, Jeremy Schiff, Allan Chen, Christopher Lee, Andrew Ying, Toby Lee, Austen Mazenko, Isani Singh, and Anjalie Kini. Six students advanced to the second qualifying round for Who Wants to Be a Mathematician. They are Lubin Deng, Sirey Zhang, Austen Mazenko, Avi Swartz, Andrew Ying, and Najalie Kini. Results will be announced October 20 if any qualified for the top 10 and a trip to San Antonio.
September 2014: Congratulations to the following six students for advancing to Round Two of the 2015 National Who Wants to Be a Mathematician Contest. They are now competing for a position as one of 10 students who will participate in the national semifinals in San Antonio in January. Lubin Deng, Sirey Zhang, Austen Mazenko, Avi Swartz, Andrew Yang, Anjalie Kini.
May 2014: 1) Result of USAJMO: Avi Swartz competed in the USAJMO two day, nine hour national contest along with 246 other students. He finished in a tie for 37th place in the nation. 2) 2014 Colorado Math Awards: On Tuesday, May 13, the 19th annual reception to honor outstanding performance in national and international mathematics competitions by Colorado students was held at Grant-Humphreys Mansion in Denver. Cherry Creek students honored were Lubin Deng, Jacob Imola, Avi Swartz, Andrew Ying, and Won Jae Kim. Other students that take math at Creek that were honored were Austen Mazenko, Hari Sowrirajan, and Anjalie Kini. 3) 2014 Colorado Mathematical Olympiad: On May 2 several students were recognized at the awards ceremony at The University of Colorado at Colorado Springs. Avi Swartz won a silver medal for 2nd place in the state. Jeremy Schiff won a bronze medal for 3rd place in the state. First honorable mention awards went to Andrew Ying, Lubin Deng, Austen Mazenko, and Anjalie Kini.
April 2014: Colorado Mathematical Olympiad 2014 Results: The 31st annual Colorado Mathematical Olympiad was held Friday, April 25, 2014 at UCCS in Colorado Springs. The awards were given out Friday, May 2. The silver medal for 2nd place was awarded to Avi Swartz. He also received a $500 scholarship to be used at any American university and books, and a calculator. Jeremy Schiff was tied for 3rd place and a bronze medal. He also received books and a calculator. Students on the Cherry Creek Math Team who received a First Honorable Mention were Lubin Deng, Andrew Ying, Austen Mazenko, and Anjalie Kini.
March 2014: Several contests came to a conclusion and others are still ongoing for 2013-2014. Lubin Deng won the Cherry Creek Trig Star contest with a perfect score in 35:21. He had the only perfect score in the state so he will advance to the National Trig Star Contest representing Colorado. Nine students advanced to the AIME based on their AMC 10 and AMC 12 scores: Avi Swartz, Sirey Zhang, Andrew Ying, Won Jae Kim, Lubin Deng, Jacob Imola, Jordan Crawford, Nicholas Hamson, and Austen Mazenko. Avi Swartz was invited to advance to the next round because of his qualifying score and will take the USAJMO contest on April 29 and 30. This is a 9 hour exam. He was one of 231 students in 10th grade or below that was selected in the US and Canada. The final round of Colorado Math League was held in March. Cherry Creek finished the year 2nd in the state to Fairview by a score of 175-172. Avi Swartz tied for first place in the state with a perfect score on each of the six tests. Other students placing in the state were: Jeffrey Li (tie for 3rd), Anjalie Kini (4th), Brandon Li (tie for 6th), Jacob Imola (7th), Lubin Deng (tie for 8th), Hari Sowrirajan (tie for 9th), Jeremy Schiff (tie for 12th), Allan Chen (tie for 13th), Austen Mazenko (tie for 14th), and Andrew Ying (tie for 16th). The Mandlebrot Competition concluded also in March. Cherry Creek was the top school in the Spruce Region – a 15 state western region. Avi Swartz was 6th in the region. Anjalie Kini tied for 18th, Jeffrey Li tied for 22nd and Lubin Deng was 23rd. Several students will travel to Colorado Springs on April 25 to compete in the Colorado Mathematical Olympiad.
February 2014: The American Mathematics Competition (AMC) is a 25 question, 75 minute multiple choice exam in secondary school mathematics. The AMC is used to help identify students with exceptional mathematics talent. In 2013, over 220,000 students competed. The AMC 10/12 is the first in a series of examinations. In the United States it is followed by the American Invitational Exam (AIME) and the USA Mathematical Olympiad. Those that advance participate in the International Mathematics Olympiad, the most prestigious and difficult secondary mathematics exam in the world. The AMC 12 A contest was held February 4. Lubin Deng, Nicholas Hamson and Jordan Crawford qualified for AIME with scores in the top 5%. AIME will be given March 13. Lubin’s score was the 3rd highest 11th grade score in Colorado. The AMC 12 B contest was held February 19. Jacob Imola scored in the top 1% and qualified for AIME. Jacob’s score was the 3rd highest 12th grade score in Colorado. The AMC 10 A contest was also held February 4. Four students qualified for AIME with scores in the top 2.5%: Andrew Ying, Avi Swartz, Sirey Zhang, and Austen Mazenko. Andrew Ying had the highest 9th grade score in Colorado followed by Avi Swartz in 2nd. Sirey Zhang had the 2nd highest 10th grade score in the state. Austen Mazenko had the highest 6th grade score in Colorado. The AMC 10 B contest was held February 19. Four students qualified for AIME: Avi Swartz, Won Jae Kim, Andrew Ying, and Sirey Zhang. Avi had the highest 9th grade score in Colorado followed by Andrew with the 2nd highest. Won Jae had the 4th highest 10th grade score in the state followed by Sirey with the 7th highest. The fifth round of the Colorado Math League was held in February. Students with a perfect score of 6 were Jacob Imola and Avi Swartz. Jeremy Schiff, Allan Chen, Austen Mazenko, and Hari Sowrirajan all scored five. Cherry Creek trails Fairview by three going into the final round in March.
January 2014: On Saturday, January 25, Cherry Creek Math Team traveled to UNC in Greeley to compete in the final round of the UNC Math Contest. Results were published a week later. Avi Swartz tied for 2nd, Jacob Imola tied for 5th, Lubin Deng placed 7th, and Jeffrey Li tied for 12th. These students will attend the awards banquet April 5th at UNC. Anjalie Kini, a Challenge student who also competes with Creek on selected competitions placed 15th for Challenge. Honorable mentions include Allan Chen and Andrew Ying. Hari Sowrirajan, a Challenge student who competes with Creek, received an honorable mention. The 4th round of Colorado Math League was held in January. Jacob Imola, Jeffrey Li, and Avi Swartz all had perfect scores. Cherry Creek is now 2nd in the state to Fairview trailing by two points with two rounds to go. The 3rd round of Mandlebrot in January resulted in three students with scores of 9 to lead Creek – Anjalie Kini, Jeffrey Li, and Avi Swartz. The 3rd round of the National Assessment & Testing contest results from December were released. Cherry Creek placed 13th as a team out of 114 schools nationally. Lubin Deng placed 13th out of 118 juniors in the nation. Avi Swartz tied for 2nd and Andrew Ying tied for 13th out of 112 freshmen in the nation. In the middle school division Hari Sowrirajan placed 2nd and Anjalie Kini placed 5th in the nation out of 31 middle school students. Students will compete in the AMC A and AMC B contests in February.
December 2013: In December, eight members of the math team competed in the National Assessment & Testing Time Trials. Students completed 10 sets of thee questions in three minutes for each set. Avi Swartz scored 77/100, Hari Sowrirajan 71/100, Anjalie Kini 62/100 and Lubin Deng 61/100. Round Two of the Mandlebrot Competition was completed. Avi Swartz again had a perfect score of 14 followed by Jacob Imola and Jeffrey Li with 12 and Anjalie Kini with 11. Avi is tied for the lead in a sixteen state region with two perfect scores. Jacob Imola, Anjalie Kini, and Lubin Deng are also ranked among the top 45. Cherry Creek is second to Fairview in the sixteen state region. The third round of Colorado Math League was December 3. Six students had a perfect score of 6. They were Jacob Imola, Jeffrey Li, Brandon Li, Avi Swartz, Anjalie Kini, and Hari Sowrirajan. Cherry Creek is now tied for 1st in the state with Fairview.
November 2013: Math Madness came to an end with Cherry Creek losing to Iolani School in Honolulu by a score of 7.7 to 7.2 This was the average of the ten top scores. Cherry Creek defeated four high schools previous to this match and ended the season ranked 51st out of 1000 high schools with the top five player averages. However, Cherry Creek was placed in a bracket to compete based on top ten averages. Creek gave a valiant effort with 17 students coming to the match against Iolani. Top scorers were Jacob Imola and Avi Swartz with 9/10 correct. They were followed by John Lee, Joyce Lee, and Jeffry Li who had 8/10. At the present time Avi Swartz is ranked 119/12,185 based on his average scores. Andrew Ying is ranked 220, Jeffrey Li 497, Allan Chen 818, and Lubin Deng 824. Results of the UNC Math Contest were received. Eleven students from Creek competed by taking an hour and a half test after school to qualify for the final round at UNC January 25. All eleven students qualified. Avi Swartz had a perfect score. Other students advancing are Lubin Deng, Jacob Imola, Jeffrey Li, Brandon Li, Sirey Zhang, Jeremy Schiff, Andrew Ying, Joyce Lee, Allen Chen, and Austen Mazenko. Creek participated in another round of Colorado Math League. Seven students had a perfect score of 6/6. They were Jeffrey Li, Jacob Imola, Avi Swartz, Lubin Deng, Brandon Li, Allen Chen, and Anjalie Kini. The first round of Mandlebrot Competition was in November. Avi Swartz had a perfect score of 14/14 followed by Lubin Deng with 11 and Jacob Imola with 10. The team also competed in a National Assessment & Testing team event scoring 50/100 as a team attempting 100 questions in 30 minutes.
October 2013: In the first round of the Colorado Math League Avi Swartz and Won Jae Kim had a perfect score of 6. National results of the National Assessment and Testing Fall Startup Event were released. At the 9th grade level Avi Swartz finished 2nd in the nation and Andrew Ying finished 24th. At the middle school level Anjalie Kini tied for 5th, Hari Sowrirajan tied for 9th and Isani Singh tied for 11th. Math Madness competition continued with Cherry Creek defeating Cascade High School from Everett, WA. High scorer was Avi Swartz with 8/10 followed by Jeffrey Li and Allen Chen each with 6/10. Creek defeated San Marino High School from San Marino, CA. High scorers in this round were Avi Swartz, Jeffrey Li, and Andrew Ying with 8/10 each. At the end of this match Cherry Creek was ranked 42/1000 teams in the nation. Avi Swartz was ranked 76th, Andrew Ying 86th, Jeffrey Li 251st, Allen Chen 469th, and Lubin Deng 795th out of 11,383 participants in the nation.
September 2013: On September 17, the Cherry Creek Math Team defeated Northside College Prep in an online match. Lubin Deng had a perfect score. Also in September, the team competed in the Fall Startup Event of the National Assessment & Testing contest. Students attempted 100 problems in 30 minutes. The best score for Creek was 83 by Avi Swartz. Students competed in the first round online of Who Wants to Be a Mathematician. Avi Swartz and Andrew Ying advanced to the second round from which 10 students will be selected to compete in the semifinals in Baltimore in January. The top prize is $5000 for the student and $5000 for the math department.
